Procedure to get Death Certificate in Bangalore (BBMP)

In this article , we share procedure involved in applying & getting Death certificate in Bangalore based on our practical experience . Hope this may be upayukta to many.


Procedure involves below Steps :


  1. Collecting "Medical certificate - Cause of Death" from Hospital before visiting cremation ground for cremating dead body.
  2. Submitting this medical certificate at Cremation ground office - before cremating the body.
  3. Provide details for cemetery report at Cremation ground office - on the same day of cremation.
  4. Collect cemetery report acknowledgment & Wait for Health inspector review / seal. (Usually a week's time )
  5. Collect the Cemetery report duly attested by Health Inspector from Cremation ground office 
  6. Submit the cemetery report along with Death certificate (DC) application at your area BBMP office
  7. Collect DC application acknowledgment and wait till the report collection date (usually 2 weeks from the date of application , depends on the BBMP office )
  8. Visit BBMP office on the mentioned date and collect the certificate

At Cremation ground office - 

  • One must not forget to collect Medical certificate indicating the cause of death before leaving to cremation ground , as this is one of the pre-requisites reviewed by cremation ground officials before they grant permission for cremation.
  • Staff collect details of the deceased such as - Name , Gender , Nationality , Marital status , Death date , Address , Cremation method (Bury / Burn ) - along with the reporter/informant details , contact number & enter this in a cemetery report register.  
  • A acknowledgment copy is immediately given to the reporter & informed to visit again once they get it reviewed by Health Inspector & application is ready for submission to BBMP office. Usually they call the reporter on the contact number registered.
  • Cemetery report will be shared with the local area health inspector who reviews the medical certificate and provides further approval with a seal / signature. This may take on a average 4-5 working days.
  • Staff call the reporter to collect this attested application & submit to respective BBMP office based on their residential constituency. 
  • All above services are offered at free of cost / no fees.
  • It is advised - the informant to take xerox copies of these forms for reference as all these documents will be taken by BBMP.

At BBMP office

  • Informant may visit the reception & ask for "Death certificate application counter"
  • Staff redirect them to the health department section where Birth & Death certificates are registered. 
  • It is advised to visit BBMP office between 10.00 - 11.30 during which the staff shall be available for collecting the applications ( Depends on the BBMP office )
  • Informant is asked to fill another application form - with details of the deceased , Religion , other health conditions like Smoking / Drinking habits etc 
  • Application is collected and a hand written acknowledgement with BBMP seal is provided , along with details on the date on which report has to be collected . Usually this duration averages between 5-7 working days.
  • Appropriate charges for 1 certificate copy not exceeding Rs.100 is collected. Additional copies may be charged as per government rules & regulations.
  • Informant to visit BBMP office again on the said date & collect the certificate.
